Last night I ran windows update on both my laptop Vista and desktop W 7. Laptop is fine, but the desktop won’t boot – goes into start-up repair tool fails – unable to repair. I’ve tried all the options, but no joy – actually it seems it can’t even see the HDD with Windows 7. I have a system image on an external drive, but can’t restore as it seems windows can’t see the HDD – “Windows did not find any disk which it can use for recreating volumes present in the backup.

Also tried booting from Windows 7 CD, and going to repair tool – similar results although start-up repair does run, but gives “partition table does not have valid system partition”. So, before I try re-installing Windows, any ideas?
